About the role

Twilio's Flex Engineering team builds the cloud contact center platform that helps businesses deliver personalized customer experiences, with this role centered on TaskRouter, the real-time engine that decides how every contact center interaction reaches the right person. The team builds high-scale, fault-tolerant, event-driven backend services running on AWS. As Staff Backend Engineer, you will set technical direction across multiple services, lead large distributed systems design, and drive availability and resilience for Tier 0 systems.

What you will do

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services that power Twilio Flex’s high scale TaskRouter system.
  • Set and own the technical direction for a set of high scale, business critical backend services running on AWS, and hold the architectural vision as it evolves
  • Lead the design of large distributed systems changes, covering scalability, data architecture, fault isolation, and migration strategy
  • Raise availability and resilience for Tier 0 systems, and make deliberate tradeoffs between reliability, cost, and delivery speed
  • Partner with peer engineering teams, platform teams, and product to align on designs and unblock shared dependencies
  • Raise the engineering bar through design review, code review, and direct mentorship of senior and mid level engineers
  • Drive operational excellence through observability, gamedays, incident response, and converting recurring issues into permanent fixes
  • Influence roadmap priorities with engineering and product leadership, and represent the team's technical position across the wider organization
