About the role

AMD's Embedded System Software team builds the Yocto-based build infrastructure and board support software that enable AMD Adaptive SoCs and FPGAs. The team owns the layers, distributions, and toolchains that turn new AMD silicon into buildable, supportable platforms for Linux, OpenBMC, and real-time workloads, working with silicon architects, hardware designers, kernel and firmware teams, and the Yocto and OpenEmbedded communities. This role takes new silicon from first power-on to a supportable, upstreamable platform and builds the images, SDKs, and reference designs customers develop against.

What you will do

  • Yocto Build Infrastructure: Design and maintain the Yocto and OpenEmbedded layers that enable new AMD silicon — SoC family definitions, machine configurations, tunes, and layer architecture across BSP and distro layers.
  • Kernel, Bootloader and Boot Image Integration: Integrate recipes for the Linux kernel, U-Boot, TF-A, and platform firmware, and build the boot artifact pipeline — device tree packaging, flash layout, signing, secure boot, and golden-image recovery.
  • Multi-Domain Builds and SDKs: Define multiconfig builds that produce Linux, RTOS, firmware, and programmable logic artifacts together, and deliver the SDKs and toolchains teams develop against.
  • Adaptive SoC and Programmable Logic: Integrate programmable logic into the software stack, including bitstream packaging, device tree overlays, and enabling PL interfaces from Linux.
  • Silicon and Board Bring-Up: Participate in new silicon and board bring-up from first power-on, holding the integrated image and driving issues to root cause with hardware and firmware teams.
  • CI, Release and Technical Leadership: Maintain QEMU-based virtual platforms and continuous integration, deliver release artifacts and software bills of materials, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architecture reviews.

What the employer is looking for

  • Deep hands-on experience with the Yocto Project, OpenEmbedded, and BitBake — authoring recipes, bbappends, and classes, building BSP and distro layers, SDK generation, and diagnosing complex build failures.
  • Strong embedded Linux and board support package background: the Linux kernel from a platform integration standpoint, device trees, kernel configuration and fragments, driver enablement, and bootloaders and early firmware such as U-Boot and TF-A.
  • Familiarity with BMC products and the platform management domain, and interfaces such as I2C, SPI, eSPI, and PECI.
  • Strong programming skills in C and C++, and proficiency in Python or shell scripting for build and automation work.
  • Experience debugging complex system-level issues spanning build systems, operating systems, drivers, bootloaders, and firmware, and familiarity with Git and CI/CD workflows.
  • Bachelor's degree + 8 years of experience or Master's degree + 6 years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with AMD Adaptive SoCs and FPGA technologies, including AMD Vivado™ or Vitis™ and hardware/software co-design.
  • Zephyr or another embedded RTOS, and RISC-V or other non-x86 architectures, including board enablement and toolchain integration.
  • Inter-processor communication frameworks such as OpenAMP in heterogeneous multi-core systems.
  • Experience with OpenBMC or a comparable BMC software stack and its integration into a Yocto distribution.
  • QEMU or comparable virtual platforms for pre-silicon development and continuous integration.
  • Experience developing reference designs or proof-of-concept solutions, and release engineering at scale including SBOM and CVE triage.
  • Contributions to the Yocto Project, OpenEmbedded, or Linux open-source projects, with strong analytical and communication skills and demonstrated technical leadership.

Benefits and support

  • Compensation and benefits are detailed in the job posting
