About the role

AMD's Embedded System Software team builds the OpenBMC and platform management software that runs on AMD Adaptive SoC platforms, delivering management, telemetry, and serviceability for servers, AI accelerators, and next-generation data center and embedded systems. The team works with AMD silicon architects, hardware designers, firmware teams, and the OpenBMC open-source community, taking new platforms from first power-on through to a supportable, upstreamable solution and building reference designs adopted by product teams and external customers. This staff-level role covers the OpenBMC distribution, hardware description and telemetry, out-of-band management interfaces, firmware update and security, platform and board bring-up, Yocto integration, and upstream technical leadership.

What you will do

  • OpenBMC Software Stack: Contribute to the OpenBMC distribution for AMD platforms, including the phosphor services, D-Bus interfaces, and application layer that deliver manageability on AMD platforms.
  • Hardware Description and Telemetry: Develop Entity Manager configurations, sensor and FRU definitions, and the thermal, power, and fan control behaviour for each platform.
  • Management Interfaces: Deliver the out-of-band management surface, including Redfish and bmcweb, IPMI, remote console and KVM, and MCTP and PLDM transports.
  • Firmware Update and Security: Build the update and recovery path, including image signing, A/B and golden-image recovery, root-of-trust integration, secure boot, and attestation.
  • Platform and Board Bring-Up: Participate in new platform and board bring-up from first power-on, driving issues to root cause with hardware, firmware, and silicon architecture teams.
  • Yocto Integration: Maintain the Yocto layers and recipes that build and configure the BMC software stack across platforms and releases.
  • Upstream and Technical Leadership: Contribute to the OpenBMC project, keep AMD trees in step with upstream, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to architecture reviews.

What the employer is looking for

  • Experience with OpenBMC or a comparable BMC software stack, including components such as Entity Manager, D-Bus services, bmcweb and Redfish, and IPMI.
  • Working knowledge of BMC products and the platform management domain — server, storage, or AI accelerator board bring-up, out-of-band management, remote console and KVM, and interfaces such as I2C, eSPI, PECI, APML, MCTP, and PLDM.
  • Strong embedded Linux background, including the Linux kernel from a platform integration standpoint: device trees, kernel configuration, driver enablement, and sysfs and hwmon.
  • Working experience with the Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded — layers, recipes, and bbappends.
  • Strong programming skills in C and C++, and proficiency in Python or shell scripting.
  • Experience debugging complex system-level issues spanning operating systems, drivers, firmware, and hardware, and familiarity with Git and CI/CD workflows.
  • Bachelor's degree + 8 years of experience or Master's degree + 6 years of experience in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.

Preferred qualifications

  • Platform security and root of trust: secure and measured boot, firmware signing, and attestation.
  • Experience developing reference designs, demonstration platforms, or proof-of-concept solutions adopted by product teams or external customers.
  • DC-SCM, DC-MHS, OCP, or other modular hardware and open compute standards.
  • Experience with AMD Adaptive SoCs and FPGA technologies, including AMD Vivado™ or Vitis™.
  • Zephyr or another embedded RTOS, RISC-V, and inter-processor communication frameworks such as OpenAMP.
  • Contributions to OpenBMC, Yocto Project, or Linux open-source projects.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, and demonstrated technical leadership.

Benefits and support

  • Compensation and benefits are detailed in the job posting
