About the role

Target India is part of Target's global technology organization supporting retail products and services. The engineering team works on scalable backend applications, microservices, event-driven systems, and observability using Java/Kotlin, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes, and related tools. This Senior Engineer will architect low-latency solutions, lead design and code reviews, ensure reliability and observability, and mentor engineers.

What you will do

  • Use your technology acumen to apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within specialized area(s) of the technology domain.
  • Evaluate new technologies and participate in decision-making, accounting for several factors such as viability within Target’s technical environment, maintainability, and cost of ownership.
  • Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities for new technologies.
  • Manage total product, financials and forecasting.
  • Lead the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership of services.
  • Lead and conduct code review, design review, testing, and debugging activities at the application level.
  • Lead functional design and architecture discussions with understanding of process flows and system diagrams to enable design decisions.
  • Participate in routine and non-routine construction, automation, and implementation activities, ensuring successful implementation with architectural and operational requirements and best practices met.
  • Provide technical oversight and coach others to resolve complex and severe technical issues.
  • Lead disaster recovery activities and contribute to disaster recovery planning.
  • Embed data quality protocols throughout data acquisition, processing, storage, and operational use.
  • Design & Development: Architect and implement high-performance, low-latency solutions.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with stakeholders to refine requirements, design solutions, and perform code reviews.
  • Scalability & Reliability: Ensure microservices are fault-tolerant and can handle high traffic.
  • Observability & Monitoring: Set up metrics, tracing, and logs to maintain operational health.
  • Mentorship: Provide guidance and best practices to junior team members.
  • Continuous Learning: Keep up-to-date with the latest trends in distributed systems and backend technologies.

Skills used in this role

What the employer is looking for

  • 5+ years in software design & development; at least 4 years building scalable backend apps in Java or Kotlin.
  • Microservices & Distributed Systems: Proven track record designing and implementing microservices, working with event-driven systems.
  • Databases: Strong knowledge of relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL) and non relational databases.
  • Messaging: Hands-on experience with Kafka for data streaming and messaging.
  • Containerization & Orchestration: Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Observability: Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (Grafana, ELK, Micrometer, OpenTelemetry).
  • Performance Optimization: Demonstrated ability to analyze and optimize system capacity, throughput, and latency.

Preferred qualifications

  • Exposure to NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra, etc.), Analytical stores (BigQuerry, etc), Apache Beam.
  • Experience with advanced CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, Drone, etc.).
