About the role
This role sits in Bosch's automotive embedded software domain, developing safety-critical firmware for the Texas Instruments TDA4Vx/Jacinto 7 SoC platform. The work spans ISO 26262-compliant firmware on Cortex-R5 MCU cores, low-level driver and HAL development, SoC safety mechanisms, bootloader and board bring-up, and inter-processor communication between the R5/RTOS safety domain and the A72/QNX application domain. The engineer will also debug hardware/software interface issues and collaborate with hardware engineers on schematics, requirements, and documentation.
What you will do
- Safety-Critical Firmware Development: Design, develop, and validate safety-critical firmware for the Cortex-R5 MCU cores in accordance with ISO 26262 standards, including driver development for peripherals like I2C, SPI, and GPIO. Low-Level Driver and HAL Implementation: Implement and maintain hardware abstraction layers (HAL) and low-level drivers, directly interacting with SoC registers and ensuring precise hardware control.
- SoC Safety Mechanisms: Configure and utilize the inherent safety features of the TI TDA4Vx SoC, such as lock-step cores, Memory Protection Units (MPUs), and error signaling modules (ESM).
- System Bring-Up and Bootloader: Take a lead role in board bring-up, bootloader development (e.g., SBL), and configuring the system boot flow to establish a secure and safe operational environment.
- Inter-Processor Communication (IPC): Architect and implement robust, high-performance IPC mechanisms for communication between the safety domain (R5/RTOS) and the application domain (A72/QNX), ensuring freedom from interference.
- RTOS & Bare-Metal Development: Develop and optimize real-time applications on safety RTOS (ETAS RTA-OS, FreeRTOS) or bare-metal environments, focusing on interrupt handling, DMA, task scheduling, and memory management for the R5 cores.
- Debugging and System Analysis: Perform deep-dive debugging of complex, system-level issues at the hardware/software interface using JTAG debuggers (Lauterbach Trace32), oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.
- Collaboration and Documentation: Work closely with hardware engineers to review schematics, define hardware requirements, and produce detailed technical documentation for firmware design and validation
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- Technical Expertise: 8-12 years in embedded software development, with a strong focus on C programming for microcontrollers.
- Proven experience in developing firmware for safety-critical systems compliant with standards like ISO 26262 or IEC 61508. Hands-on experience with the TI TDA4Vx/Jacinto 7 family, including the use of TI SDKs (Processor SDK, MCU+ SDK).
- Deep expertise in developing for ARM Cortex-R5 or similar safety-oriented MCUs, including bare-metal programming.
- Experience configuring and validating hardware safety mechanisms (MPU, ECC, lock-step). Proficiency with a safety-certified real-time operating system (e.g., ETAS RTA-OS, FreeRTOS).
- B. E/ B. Tech E&C, EEE or any equivalent
Preferred qualifications
- Experience developing on the Cortex-A72 cores and familiarity with QNX Neutrino RTOS.
- Familiarity with MISRA C/C++ guidelines and using static analysis tools (e.g., Polyspace, Klocwork)
- Knowledge of secure boot processes, cryptographic accelerators, and hardware security modules (HSMs).
- Experience with performance optimization, cache coherency, and multicore system tuning. Familiarity with automotive communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, and Automotive Ethernet.
- Experience with test automation, particularly using the Robot Framework. Prior experience on projects directly related to our platform and toolchain environment.
- Proficiency in low-level debugging using JTAG/SWD debuggers (e.g., Lauterbach Trace32, TI XDS probes). Experience with modern development tools including Git, CI/CD pipelines, and artifact management (Artifactory).
