About the role
Barclays is a global financial services organization, and this role sits within a team that designs, develops and improves software to provide business, platform and technology capabilities for customers and colleagues. The role focuses on enterprise Java and Spring Boot applications, RESTful microservices, relational databases and secure, high-quality delivery. The Software Engineer will collaborate with product and engineering teams, lead technical design discussions and code reviews, and support application reliability in a regulated banking environment.
What you will do
- To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.
- Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
- Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- Strong experience in designing, developing, and maintaining enterprise-grade applications using Java, Spring Boot, and object-oriented programming principles.
- Proven expertise in developing and consuming RESTful web services, microservices architectures, and application programming interfaces for scalable solutions.
- Hands-on experience with relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, or MySQL, including performance tuning and query optimization.
- Extensive knowledge of software development lifecycle practices, version control systems, continuous integration, and continuous deployment pipelines.
- Ability to analyze complex business requirements and translate them into high-quality technical solutions while ensuring application reliability and performance.
- Experience in implementing secure coding standards, application monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support activities.
- Demonstrated experience leading technical design discussions, code reviews, and development activities across complex projects.
- Experience working in banking, financial services, or other highly regulated industries is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical field is mandatory
- Master's Degree is preferred but not mandatory.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform for modern application deployments.
- Knowledge of containerization and orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes, for scalable application management.
- Familiarity with front-end technologies such as Angular, React, JavaScript, HTML, and Cascading Style Sheets to support full-stack development initiatives.
- Experience with agile delivery methodologies, including Scrum or Kanban, and participation in cross-functional product teams.
- Knowledge of event-driven architectures, messaging platforms, and distributed systems design patterns.
- Strong communication, mentoring, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to guide junior developers and support technical decision-making.
