About the role
Microsoft 365 Copilot is reimagining search with AI, building Copilot Search so that people can find and reason over email, files, chats, meetings and people with grounded, cited answers. The team ships this experience at global scale across web, desktop and mobile hosts, including SharePoint and OneDrive. This Software Engineer II role builds Copilot Search frontend features end to end in React and TypeScript, driving web performance, AI answer integration, experimentation and live-site reliability.
What you will do
- Design, build and ship Copilot Search features end to end in React and TypeScript, from design review and implementation through experimentation and worldwide rollout.
- Build performant, accessible and localized user interfaces that work consistently across web, desktop and mobile hosts, as well as SharePoint and OneDrive.
- Drive web performance through server-side rendering, hydration and rendering optimization, early data fetching, service workers and bundle-size reduction, with a focus on end-to-end latency and time to first answer.
- Integrate AI-generated answers into the search experience, including streaming responses, citations and source attribution, and graceful handling of partial or failed responses.
- Instrument features with telemetry, define success metrics, and run A/B experiments and staged rollouts to make data-driven product decisions.
- Own the reliability of the features you build, including monitoring, alerting, automated health checks and diagnosis of client issues such as authentication and host-loading failures.
- Participate in the team's on-call rotation, mitigating production incidents quickly and driving root-cause fixes so they do not recur.
- Partner closely with product managers, designers and backend search and relevance engineers to turn ambiguous ideas into polished, shippable experiences.
- Raise the engineering bar through thoughtful code reviews, automated testing and contributions to shared components and engineering practices.
- Use AI-assisted development tools and LLM-based techniques, such as automated analysis of user feedback and quality evaluation, to move faster and improve product quality.
