About the role

Akamai's Compute Team provides infrastructure and services that enable developers to build next-generation applications, with a mission to make computing simple, scalable, accessible, and affordable. The role works on virtualization technologies including QEMU, QAPI, and QMP, VM optimization, Linux kernel features, and software running on hosts in Akamai data centers. As a Senior Software Engineer, this position also provides technical leadership, open-source integration, and mentoring within an agile team.

What you will do

  • Working on the virtualization stack (QEMU, QAPI, QMP) and VM optimization
  • Leveraging Linux kernel features to enhance hypervisor performance and stack functionality.
  • Researching, proposing, and integrating relevant open-source projects based on product objectives
  • Providing technical expertise and leadership for your team.
  • Developing and engineering the software running on the hosts in our data centers
  • Working with a team & helping through hiring, training, coaching and mentoring.

Skills used in this role

What the employer is looking for

  • Have at-least 5 years of relevant experience in optimized software running on large distributed production environments & a Bachelors degree (CS)
  • Have experience developing software on the Linux kernel. QEMU, Scheduling, Live migrations, memory organization, API, & debugging is advantageous.
  • Be proficient in writing organized, efficient, and well-documented Python code; knowledge of Go or Perl is advantageous.
  • Have experience developing systems software on Linux, with a good understanding of Linux internals, processes and threads, cgroups, and resource management.
  • Have knowledge of NUMA architecture, CPU topology, memory locality, and scheduling.
  • Have experience designing abstract software architectures from ideas through implementation and creatively apply domain experience to solve technical challenges
