About the role

Oracle is a global technology company delivering enterprise software, database technologies, and cloud infrastructure. Oracle's Database organization develops and operates scalable, reliable, cloud-native services, combining backend engineering, infrastructure automation, DevOps practices, and production operations with growing work on MCP servers and AI-agent integrations. This Principal Software Engineer role designs, develops, deploys, and operates highly available backend services using Java, SQL, distributed systems, microservices, and AI-assisted development tools such as Codex.

What you will do

  • Develop cloud-native backend services: Design, build, test, and maintain reliable, scalable services using modern cloud technologies, Java, SQL, and Agile engineering practices.
  • Automate infrastructure and deployments: Develop scripts, infrastructure configurations, and automated deployment workflows using technologies such as Terraform and CI/CD pipelines to support repeatable global service deployments.
  • Apply AI-assisted development: Use Codex and other agentic coding tools extensively for code exploration, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation. Independently validate generated output for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Ensure production service reliability: Respond to production escalations, lead incident recovery and root-cause investigations, and implement improvements to reduce recurring issues and strengthen service availability.
  • Improve monitoring and observability: Instrument services, enhance diagnostics, and use monitoring systems, alerts, and dashboards to detect, investigate, and resolve operational problems.
  • Collaborate across engineering and operations: Partner with Support, Operations, and project stakeholders to resolve technical challenges, coordinate service improvements, and maintain operational readiness.
  • Drive engineering quality: Participate in code reviews, provide constructive feedback, improve engineering practices, and create technical and operational documentation that makes services easier to maintain and operate.
  • Contribute to AI integration capabilities: Support the design, development, and operation of MCP servers and related integrations with AI agents as platform requirements evolve.

Skills used in this role

What the employer is looking for

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend development and production systems.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, or equivalent software-development experience.
  • Strong hands-on programming skills in Java and SQL.
  • Experience designing, developing, testing, debugging, and maintaining production backend services.
  • Strong software engineering fundamentals, including code quality, maintainability, performance, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience participating in code reviews and delivering reliable production software.
  • Practical experience developing or operating cloud-native services.
  • Understanding of distributed systems, microservice architectures, and highly available services.
  • Ability to reason about scalability, service availability, failure handling, and operational reliability.
  • Experience automating software deployments or installations using scripting and engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and version-control practices.
  • Ability to contribute to service instrumentation and repeatable deployment workflows.
  • Experience troubleshooting production software and investigating service failures.
  • Strong root-cause-analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with Support and Operations teams during incidents and service improvements.
  • Familiarity with monitoring, alerts, logs, and operational diagnostics.
  • Ability and willingness to use Codex or comparable agentic development tools as part of everyday engineering work, while independently validating generated results.
  • Ability to work effectively in an Agile development environment.
  • Strong technical communication, documentation, collaboration, and continuous-improvement skills.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience developing commercial software products that process large data volumes in highly available distributed environments.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform or comparable infrastructure-as-code technologies.
  • Expertise in one or more public cloud platforms: OCI, AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience using Grafana dashboards, alerts, or comparable monitoring tools.
  • Experience with Git, Bitbucket, or similar version-control tools.
  • Experience designing or developing MCP servers.
  • Experience integrating cloud services with AI agents.
  • Familiarity with JavaScript and Node.js.
  • Prior experience using Codex or other agentic coding tools and validating their output.
  • Experience improving CI/CD pipelines
