About the role
The mechanical & thermal team is an integrated part of Cisco's HW organization, responsible for a variety of complex electro-mechanical designs including central office networking products (1RU to 40RU), outdoor mobility equipment, high performance thermal solutions and complex PCB assemblies. The role focuses on electro-mechanical and thermal design, validation and simulation for equipment deployed in both controlled and uncontrolled environments. This technical leader will lead small-scale mechanical engineering projects, develop optimized cooling solutions, run FEA/thermal simulations, and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders on prototyping, feasibility and manufacturing.
What you will do
- May lead small scale mechanical engineering projects (one to two features) with manageable risks and resource requirements and may take on project management responsibilities
- Collaborates with multiple stakeholders to support assembly, fabrication and manufacturing of products by using an understanding of manufacturing process for plastic, diecast, sheet metal, interconnect and power delivery and conducts failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
- Performs stack up tolerance analyses to ensure designs meet six sigma quality for high volume mass production
- Assists senior engineers with test plans, mechanical design testing, failure analysis, reliability, environmental testing and verification plans for developed design elements, materials, parts and products.
- Verifies the quality of the design, resolves issues and advances as needed
- Performs moderately complex simulation with supervision from senior engineers
- Reviews and compiles the BoM for large teams or across multiple products
- Contributes to design improvements and assembly cost savings and avoidance by helping identify the right materials
- Monitors scope, schedule and budgets for projects
- Collaborates with multiple stakeholders to conduct design feasibility testing and prototyping, including working with marketing teams directly to ensure feature and requests from customers are achievable
- Ensures that feasibility and prototyping guidelines are met
- Performs simple mechanical simulations such as FEA analysis to support design features
- Optimizes thermal solutions with thermal engineers prior to prototype
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- Bachelors + 10-14 years of related experience, or Masters + 8-10 years of related experience, or PhD + 6-8 years of related experience
- Hands on thermal design and validation experience in electro-mechanical equipment that would be deployed in different environments ranging from central office (controlled environment) to outdoor (uncontrolled environment).
- Expertise in concept/architecture, establishing thermal boundaries and optimized cooling solutions which allow to maximise the performance of equipment with minimal power budget for cooling.
- Expertise in design and verification of latest heatsink technologies (Heat pipes, Chill/Cold plates, 2D/3D vapor chambers) which include air and liquid based medium for cooling.
- Strong validation background and ability to plan a comprehensive test plan with minimal iterations.
- Strong command on simulation tools and modelling of complex thermal environment.
Preferred qualifications
- Strong communication skills with c/f collaboration and problem-solving abilities.
- Good knowledge of Mechanical design and manufacturing processes.
- Experience in product design validation, particularly in thermal and mechanical areas, is required.
- Good knowledge of Fan/TIM/Heatsink types of selection and verification.
- Experience in generating automation tools, Python scripting for data management and smart design and review.
- Hands on Experience with Electronics cooling tools like Flotherm, Flotherm XT, Ansys Icepak, Ansys CFX
- Hands on experience in Liquid cooling technology, wrt both testing and design tools and manufacturing techniques.
- ASIC level knowledge on handling detailed thermal models containing core details like power maps, TIM1, TIM1.5, TIM2 Bond line thickness, Lidded/Lidless, Silicon 2D/2.5Detc.,
- Hands on Experience in using AI tools in day-to-day work.
- Hands on knowledge on using Thermal testing tools with available DAQ’s in the market, Environmental chambers.
- Proficient in creating test plans, executing tests, and reporting results.
- Experienced in handling power supplies, electronic loads, data loggers, thermocouple installation and removal, IR cameras, air velocity sensors, and heat sink assemblies.
- Capable of setting up tests, system bring-up and troubleshooting issues with minimal assistance.
- Familiar with MDVT, EDVT, airflow, acoustics and environmental testing for networking products.
Benefits and support
- Compensation and benefits are detailed in the job posting
