About the role

Chargebee is a provider of billing and monetization solutions that helps businesses with recurring revenue models streamline revenue and finance operations; its team members are based primarily in India, the U.S., and Europe. The legal function supports the company's global operations and commercial transactions, working closely with Legal, Finance, Operations, Sales, IT, and Customer Success. As Lead Legal Counsel, the role owns end-to-end drafting, review, and negotiation of complex commercial and vendor agreements, advises on global data protection and privacy compliance, and builds risk mitigation and contract lifecycle processes.

What you will do

  • Lead the end-to-end drafting, review, and negotiation of complex commercial agreements and vendor contracts.
  • Provide expert legal counsel on data protection and privacy regulations to ensure global compliance across all business functions.
  • Develop and implement robust risk mitigation strategies for commercial engagements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Finance, and Product teams to streamline contract lifecycles and approval workflows.
  • Monitor evolving legal landscapes in the technology sector to proactively update internal policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Manage legal documentation and maintain a central repository for all executed agreements and compliance certifications.
  • Mentor junior legal professionals and provide guidance on complex interpretative matters of commercial law.
  • Partnering internally to streamline agreement review and processing and providing regular detailed status reports to internal departments.

What the employer is looking for

  • 5+ years of experience in technology and commercial law within an in-house legal department or a reputable law firm.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) or an equivalent advanced legal degree from an accredited institution.
  • Proven experience negotiating complex SaaS transactions and multi-jurisdictional commercial agreements.
  • Deep understanding of global privacy frameworks, including GDPR and international data protection standards.
  • Proven ability to translate complex legal requirements into actionable, strategic advice for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and exercise independent judgment.
  • Strong analytical skills with a decisive approach to resolving legal ambiguities and contractual disputes.

Preferred qualifications

  • Proficiency in leveraging contract lifecycle management (CLM) platforms and AI-driven legal tools to streamline workflows.
  • Knowledge of AI ethics frameworks and the legal implications of machine learning in software products.
  • Familiarity with financial regulations or payment processing legal requirements.
  • Active participation in a relevant professional legal association or bar council.
