About the role
Barclays is seeking a Senior Java Developer in Pune to help evolve its infrastructure and deployment pipelines and build robust, scalable, and secure digital solutions. The role focuses on Java, Apache Kafka, event-driven architectures, distributed systems, cloud-native application development, and Kubernetes. The developer will design and deliver high-quality software, collaborate across product and engineering teams, and support technical leadership and mentoring.
What you will do
- To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.
- Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
- Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
- Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
- Hands-on experience in Java development with proven expertise in enterprise-level applications.
- Strong technical leadership experience with ability to mentor and guide development teams.
- Proven ability to drive distributed application development across multiple stakeholders and teams.
- Extensive hands-on experience in distributed system design and architecture
- Proficiency with Apache Kafka and event-driven architectures.
- Strong hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS/Azure/GCP) and cloud-native application development.
- Hands-on expertise with Kubernetes and container orchestration.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with ability to align technical solutions across distributed teams.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- You may be assessed on key critical skills relevant for success in role, such as risk and controls, change and transformation, business acumen, strategic thinking and digital and technology, as well as job-specific technical skills.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, or similar).
- Expertise in microservices architecture and design patterns.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices.
- Experience with Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, or similar frameworks.
- Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack).
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments with cross-functional teams.
