About the role
Atlassian builds team collaboration software products that help teams plan, track, and ship work, and this role sits within its Engineering organization. The position leads a departmental engineering organization responsible for high-scale distributed systems in a modern cloud environment. The Head of Engineering will lead a distributed team of 40–80+ engineers across multiple teams, managing Engineering Managers and Senior Staff/Principal ICs while partnering with Product and Design on multi-year technical and organizational strategy.
What you will do
- Strategic & Triad Leadership: Partner with Product, Design, and program leaders to define the vision, strategic roadmap, and funded execution plans for your department.
- Organizational Design & Scale: Build, structure, and evolve high-performing engineering teams; recruit, mentor, and coach Engineering Managers and senior technical leaders.
- Delivery & OKR Ownership: Drive accountability for significant company-level and department-level OKRs, balancing feature delivery, technical debt, platform stability, and enterprise scale.
- Technical Stewardship & Architecture: Guide long-term architectural decisions, reliability, and security standards across multiple services and systems in a modern cloud environment.
- Cross-Organizational Influence: Navigate high-level cross-team dependencies, driving alignment across platform, product, and infrastructure organizations to find win/win trade-offs.
- Culture & Operational Excellence: Foster an inclusive, high-trust engineering culture with a strong bias for action, continuous improvement, and rigorous operational and on-call hygiene.
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- 10+ years of software development and engineering management experience.
- 3+ years of experience as a manager-of-managers, with a proven track record of scaling organizations of 50+ engineers.
- 5+ years of experience building and operating large-scale SaaS/PaaS/cloud platforms in complex, distributed environments.
- Strategic Execution: Demonstrated experience defining and delivering on multi-quarter roadmaps and translating high-level business ambiguity into clear, funded execution plans.
- Triad & Stakeholder Collaboration: Proven ability to build influential relationships with Product, Design, and executive leadership.
- Communication: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and executive audiences.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience leading globally distributed teams across multiple time zones and geographies.
- Background in modern data/ML platforms, enterprise readiness, developer experience, or core platform infrastructure.
- Track record of driving continuous delivery, observability, and modern DevOps/SRE best practices at scale.
