About the role
Barclays is seeking an experienced AVP Software Engineer to lead the design, development, and delivery of secure, scalable, and resilient applications for customer journey solutions. The role combines hands-on engineering with technical oversight and project delivery across web technologies including React, JavaScript/TypeScript, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes. The engineer will also lead and develop a mobile engineering team, drive engineering excellence, automation, security, CI/CD, and operational best practices.

- Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
- Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
- Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
- Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
- Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
- Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
- Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.

- Ability to design, build, test, and operate production services using technologies such as REACT, JavaScript / TypeScript, HTML, CSS, AWS, Docker, and Kubernetes, together with the desire to broaden your expertise.
- Design web solution catering accessibility and responsive requirement.
- Component development using Node-based build tooling
- Supporting end-to-end testing.
- Ability to use AI engineering tools to accelerate research, code understanding, prototyping, implementation, and documentation while applying sound engineering judgment.
- Experience building production services, distributed systems, or shared platform capabilities.
- Experience working with APIs, RESTful services, integration contracts, and data or domain models.
- Experience with authentication, authorization, and identity management.
- Ability to communicate technical decisions clearly, collaborate across teams and time zones, and support other engineers through feedback and knowledge sharing.
- DevOps Skillsets: Gitlab, Terraform, Ansible, Datadog, constrainers and Helm.
- Strong understanding of application architecture, dependency management, and maintainable code design.
Preferred qualifications
- Lead the design, development and support of secure, scalable and high-performing applications.
- Hands-on in software engineering activities, including Coding, solution design, code reviews, architecture governance, troubleshooting and technical delivery.
- Define and implement engineering standards, patterns and development best practices.
- Drive adoption of modern CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, security controls and release automation.
- Collaborate closely with Product Owner, Solution Architect, Security, Platform and QA teams to deliver integrated digital solutions.
- Ensure compliance with enterprise security, risk, governance and regulatory requirements.
- Guide architectural discussions and ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, secure, and aligned to engineering standards.
- Provide technical leadership across various technologies like PING ID, Java, JavaScript, API, Docker, Google Cloud and secure code engineering.
- Mentor and coach team on career development through feedback, technical assistance performance management and development planning.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and team growth initiatives.
- Champion DevSecOps practices, observability, reliability engineering and operational excellence across the mobile landscape.
- Promote knowledge sharing through code reviews, technical discussions, pairing sessions, and documentation.
- Balance technical excellence with delivery commitments and business outcomes.
