About the role
The role sits within Microsoft's cloud networking organization, where engineers design, implement, and operate the network infrastructure behind Microsoft's datacenters and online services. Work spans network component design, datacenter Bills of Materials, telemetry monitoring, incident response, and automation of deployment and repair processes. The Cloud Network Engineer II independently develops reliable, secure, scalable, and high-performance network designs and collaborates with engineering and Program Management teams on requirements-driven solutions.
What you will do
- Demonstrates some knowledge of data — knows what data is needed, knows how to find new or missing data, and can describe defects and their relevance to product and service targets. Identifies patterns and trends in data and interprets them to inform decisions related to products and/or services.
- Collaborates with teams across the organization to support and manage safe and secure network deployments. Works with machine-readable definitions to manage deployments.
- Supports the management of incidents by applying technical knowledge to diagnose and triage issues with a commitment to maintaining the quality of products and services. Takes notes during incidents and participates in postmortem and root cause analysis processes.
- Contributes to the design and implementation of automated tools and services to increase engineering efficiency, reduce operational burden, and reduce human errors in production. Uses existing automation and makes suggestions for improvements to existing automation to increase efficiency, security, and reduce errors based on learnings and experience.
- Provides instructions to datacenter or network site staff/technicians on how to securely repair, replace, and maintain physical network hardware and components deployed in production. Identifies gaps and inefficiencies in processes related to securely installing and deploying new hardware and components and provides instructions to address gaps.
- Monitors network telemetry and performs analyses to identify patterns that reveal errors and unexpected problems. Makes suggestions on improvements to monitoring based on observations and experience.
- Contributes to the design of process or technology solutions that resolve issues with processes, network resources, and/or tooling, and identifies deficiencies in existing systems and designs or inefficiencies in existing architecture. Ensures solutions deliver high-quality improvements against Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Develops network components (e.g., device, software, tools) based on customer, business, and technical requirements that have been defined in partnership with engineering and Program Management teams. Ensures that designs meet all security, functional, performance, scale, reliability, safety, and compliance requirements with minimal guidance.
- Applies knowledge of network technologies to contribute to network design, implementation, and operation.
- Independently develops reliable, security, scalable, and high-performance designs for network components, and features. Assists with producing and maintaining design documents and implementation plans.
- Actively participates in design and network, test plan, or code reviews to identify risks and prevent classes of bugs prior to production release, define essential details related to network implementation (e.g., physical connectivity, power, protocols, telemetry), and shares best practices in implementing and qualifying designs based on relevant past experience.
- Completes Bills of Materials (BoMs) for datacenters or network sites based on network requirements, operational needs, and capabilities of network components and hardware. Translates high-level designs for datacenters or network sites into low-level designs and collaborates with internal teams and external partners to facilitate the development, expansion, or modification of network infrastructure within existing datacenters or network sites.
