About the role

The Global Financial Crimes Surveillance Unit (GFCSU) sits within American Express's Global Risk & Compliance organization and Global Financial Crimes Compliance (GFCC), providing end-to-end oversight and support of global financial crimes investigations. Its Quality Control Review (QCR) Team monitors Financial Crimes investigations to support adherence to legal, regulatory, internal procedure, and quality standards. The QCR B30 Analyst is an individual contributor who independently reviews completed investigative casework and decisions, identifies quality gaps and errors, challenges investigative conclusions, and communicates findings to investigators and leaders.

What you will do

  • Conduct independent Quality Control Reviews of Financial Crimes Compliance processes, including Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), and Screening cases managed by GFCC Investigative teams, evaluating completed casework and investigative decisions for adherence to applicable procedures, quality standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Exercise independent judgment and decision-making when evaluating investigative casework, including assessing the reasonableness and defensibility of investigative conclusions and decisions; identifying documentation gaps, inconsistencies, or flaws in investigative judgment; determining whether identified issues represent material or non-material errors under established standards; and clearly supporting determinations through applicable procedures, documented evidence, and risk-based rationale.
  • Apply knowledge of AML/BSA requirements, financial-crime typologies, red flags, investigative methodologies, and escalation criteria to identify circumstances where additional research, investigation, remediation, or escalation may be warranted.
  • Communicate and substantiate QCR findings to investigators, leaders, and other stakeholders, translating procedural expectations and risk considerations into clear and actionable feedback; constructively navigating professional disagreement and challenge; and ensuring appropriate remediation of identified errors prior to case closure.
  • Participate in quality calibration and thematic/root-cause analysis to promote consistent application of QCR standards, error classification, investigative expectations, and procedural requirements across investigators and portfolios, including objectively considering additional information or differing perspectives and adjusting conclusions when calibration or evidence warrants.
  • Identify recurring quality themes, emerging quality or investigative risks, or opportunities to strengthen case quality and investigative consistency, and appropriately escalate observations that may require additional review, clarification, or process improvement.
  • Support Financial Crimes investigations and other case-review activities based on business needs, applying the same standards of analytical rigor, procedural adherence, and regulatory awareness expected of the role.

Skills used in this role

What the employer is looking for

  • 4+ years of combined relevant experience in Financial Crimes and/or Risk Operations, including areas such as Anti-Money Laundering (AML)/Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Know Your Customer (KYC), Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD), Sanctions Screening, Anti-Corruption, Operational Risk, Credit Bust-Out (CBO), Fraud Prevention, Credit, Collections, or other directly relevant Financial Crimes or Risk Operations disciplines.
  • Proven analytical and critical-thinking skills, with demonstrated ability to research, assess, interpret, and synthesize information from multiple sources; apply sound judgment; and reach logical, well-supported conclusions on matters with potential regulatory or financial-crime risk impact.
  • Proven experience independently making and defending complex risk-based decisions with limited direction, including interpreting procedures and standards where facts require judgment rather than straightforward application of prescribed criteria.
  • Strong stakeholder communication and influencing skills, including the ability to influence without direct authority, clearly articulate and substantiate findings and conclusions, objectively evaluate differing perspectives or challenges, and resolve questions through evidence-based discussion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated ability to clearly articulate findings, rationale, recommendations, and conclusions to investigators, leaders, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Excellent time-management and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to independently manage workload, balance competing priorities, and meet quality and productivity expectations in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, with demonstrated ability to identify inconsistencies, documentation gaps, errors, and other quality concerns within investigative casework.

Preferred qualifications

  • Prior experience independently assessing alerts, cases, investigations, or other risk decisions; challenging investigative conclusions when appropriate; identifying quality gaps or errors; and delivering effective, constructive feedback to support case quality and consistent application of investigative standards. Relevant experience may include Quality Control (QC), Quality Assurance (QA), Business Self-Testing (BST), peer review, or other case-quality/review functions.
  • Relevant Financial Crimes, fraud, compliance, or risk industry certification, such as Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, consistent with the knowledge, skills, and responsibilities of the role.
  • Knowledge of American Express products, systems, investigative processes, and applicable Financial Crimes regulatory framework.

  • Competitive base salaries
  • Bonus incentives
  • Support for financial-well-being and retirement
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and disability benefits (depending on location)
  • Flexible working model with hybrid, onsite or virtual arrangements depending on role and business need
