About the role
The eBay Frameworks Team builds the developer platforms that power eBay's engineering organization. The role sits on the Python Managed Stack, eBay's paved path for Python application lifecycle management on eBay Cloud, which reaches GA in mid-2026 and powers 30+ applications across 13 domains. This Platform Engineer will build and grow the stack with end-to-end ownership spanning development, certification and releases, developer support, containerization and observability, security and auth, and AI tooling, working alongside US and Shanghai-based teammates.
What you will do
- Platform Development: Design, develop and maintain core Python modules used daily by internal engineers.
- Platform Certification, Releases, Upgrade Automation: Drive certifications, automated monthly releases, and Site-Wide Upgrades (SWU) to ensure secure, seamless deployments.
- Developer Support: Provide support to developers, debugging issues and triaging requests in our Slack channels.
- Support as a feedback loop: Turn recurring issues into platform capabilities, automation, tests, or documentation to reduce recurring support work.
- Containerization & Observability: Maintain base images (Ubuntu 24 + Python 3.12), optimize image registries, and embed out-of-the-box tracing (OpenTelemetry), metrics (Prometheus), and logging.
- Security & Auth: Integrate TrustFabric, OAuth, and secrets management directly into the framework layer.
- AI Tooling: Build AI-driven developer productivity tools (Python AI Assistant skills) and knowledge graphs.
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- Experience: 3+ years in backend/platform software engineering.
- Core Python: Deep familiarity with Python 3.10+, type hints, async programming, and modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Flask).
- Delivery Engineering: Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines (Tekton, Jenkins).
- Tooling: Familiarity with Python dependency tools (Poetry, UV), packaging, and REST/OpenAPI.
- Ownership: Comfortable owning software beyond writing the code—testing, shipping, operating, supporting its users, and improving the platform based on what you learn.
- Collaboration: High developer empathy with strong written communication skills to partner across time zones.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, or Grafana/Sherlock.
- Background in Internal Developer Platforms
