About the role
Walmart's Data Platforms team manages and modernizes enterprise-scale database environments spanning SQL Server, Azure SQL, PostgreSQL, and Spanner across hybrid cloud and on-premises infrastructure. The team focuses on high-performance, secure, and automated database operations. This senior software engineer role is hands-on database administration: deploying and tuning SQL Server and Azure SQL estates, engineering HA/DR, executing cloud migrations, and automating operations with PowerShell and Azure CLI.
What you will do
- Hybrid & Cloud Administration: Deploy, configure, and maintain high-performance on-premises SQL Server instances and Azure SQL Cloud ecosystems (Azure SQL Database, Managed Instances, and SQL on Azure VMs).
- Performance Engineering: Monitor health and optimize performance across hybrid environments. Diagnose and resolve complex engine bottlenecks, optimize slow-running T-SQL queries, tune indexes, and analyze execution plans.
- High Availability & Disaster Recovery (HA/DR): Design and maintain robust business continuity strategies using Always On Availability Groups, Azure Geo-Replication, Failover Groups, and automated backup/restore validation.
- Cloud Migrations: Plan and execute seamless, zero-downtime migrations from on-premises SQL Servers to Azure SQL platforms using tools like Azure Database Migration Service (DMS).
- Security & Compliance: Enforce enterprise data security utilizing Azure Active Directory (Entra ID) integration, Row-Level Security, Data Masking, and Always Encrypted protocols.
- Automation & DevOps: Streamline database deployments and routine maintenance tasks using PowerShell, Azure CLI, and SQL Server Agent jobs. + Java or Python is a plus.
