About the role
Walmart Global Tech's Global Data Foundation builds data products and tooling for internal teams and partner organizations. The team's UI surfaces include status dashboards, data quality and observability consoles, self-service portals, and admin tooling. The Principal Engineer, UI owns front-end architecture, leads design and code reviews, and mentors senior and staff engineers while partnering with product, UX, and backend/data teams.
What you will do
- Own end-to-end front-end architecture for GDF's internal and partner-facing tools — status dashboards, data quality/observability consoles, self-service portals, and admin tooling.
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable, maintainable front-end systems: component libraries, shared design-system usage, and micro-frontend patterns where appropriate.
- Partner with Product, UX/Design, and backend/data engineering teams to translate requirements into performant, accessible, delightful user experiences.
- Drive adoption of Walmart's Living Design system and WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility standards consistently across all GDF UI surfaces.
- Lead code and design reviews across the team; set front-end engineering standards for performance, testing, accessibility, and code quality.
- Mentor Senior and Staff front-end engineers, helping them grow their technical judgment and architectural scope.
- Resolve complex, cross-team UI blockers — API contract mismatches, design-system gaps, inconsistent data contracts from upstream services — and drive them to resolution with a clear owner and next step.
- Own front-end performance (load times, rendering, bundle size) and reliability (error monitoring, observability) for GDF's UI surfaces.
- Evaluate and introduce new front-end tools, frameworks, or patterns that meaningfully improve delivery velocity or user experience quality.
- Represent GDF UI engineering in cross-org architecture and design-system reviews.

What the employer is looking for

- Expert-level proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript and a modern component framework (React strongly preferred).
- Deep experience with component-driven architecture, design systems, and state management (Redux, Context API, or similar).
- Strong understanding of web performance optimization, responsive design, and accessibility (WCAG 2.1/2.2 Level AA) — not as an afterthought, but as a design constraint from day one.
- Experience with front-end testing frameworks (Jest, React Testing Library, Playwright or Cypress).
- Proven track record leading UI architecture decisions across multiple teams and aligning stakeholders without direct authority.
- Experience mentoring Senior/Staff-level engineers and raising a team's front-end engineering standards.
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience building internal data tooling or dashboards (data quality, pipeline observability, admin consoles) for large-scale data platforms.
- Hands-on experience with Walmart's Living Design system, or comparable large-scale enterprise design systems.
- Experience with data-visualization libraries (D3.js, Chart.js, Recharts, or similar).
- Experience with micro-frontend architectures at enterprise scale.
- Experience integrating with GraphQL or REST APIs at scale, including handling complex, high-volume data in the UI layer.
- Experience shipping UI across multiple international markets, including localization and multi-language support (e.g., US, Canada, Mexico).
- Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 3 years' experience in software engineering or related area.
