About the role
Walmart's Corporate Tech and Services builds technology solutions that support millions of customers, associates, and stakeholders worldwide, and as part of Walmart Global Tech the team builds next-generation products and platforms to solve complex enterprise problems at Walmart scale. The team works across cloud-based enterprise applications, backend services, and full-stack platforms using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, and React/Node.js. This Staff Software Engineer role provides technical leadership while remaining hands-on in architecting, designing, and building scalable, reliable, and secure systems, driving engineering best practices, and mentoring engineers.
What you will do
- Lead the architecture, design, and development of scalable enterprise applications and platforms.
- Provide technical direction for complex initiatives spanning multiple applications and engineering teams.
- Partner with Product, Business, and Engineering teams to translate requirements into scalable technical solutions.
- Drive architecture/design and code reviews, evaluating trade-offs across scalability, performance, security, and reliability.
- Design and build backend services using Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, and distributed system patterns, with React/Node.js for end-to-end solutions where needed.
- Build reusable frameworks, APIs, and platform capabilities that can be leveraged across teams.
- Drive engineering best practices around code quality, testing, security, observability, CI/CD, and operational excellence.
- Troubleshoot complex technical and production issues and drive long-term solutions.
- Mentor engineers and raise the engineering bar through design reviews, code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 10+ years of software engineering experience building large-scale enterprise applications and distributed systems.
- Strong hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs, and distributed systems.
- Experience with React, TypeScript, Node.js and/or NestJS is preferred.
- Strong fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, object-oriented programming, system design, and design patterns.
- Experience designing systems for scalability, high availability, resiliency, security, and performance.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, GCP, or AWS, along with CI/CD, DevOps, logging, metrics, and observability.
- Experience with databases, data modeling, caching, and performance optimization.
- Strong technical leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to influence across teams.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience designing and building ETL/ELT pipelines, including batch and real-time data processing solutions.
- Experience working with data lakes and data warehouses, including data modeling, schema design, partitioning, and query/performance optimization.
- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration platforms such as Apache Airflow/Astronomer, including DAG development, scheduling, monitoring, and pipeline reliability.
- Experience building applications and APIs that integrate with large-scale enterprise data platforms.
- Working knowledge of Python and modern data processing technologies.
- Exposure to Generative AI, LLM-based applications, RAG, information retrieval, or machine learning.
- Experience exploring and applying AI-assisted engineering and automation to improve developer productivity, software quality, and operational efficiency.
