About the role
The team builds and operates technology that helps Walmart understand and improve its physical environments, modernize manufacturing, and support the assets that keep stores running. Its work spans digital representations and simulations of stores and supply chain facilities, IoT and automation in meat and dairy plants, and GNFR systems connecting stores, service technicians, and distribution centers. The Senior Director of Engineering will lead technology delivery across Energy, Real Estate and Manufacturing within the Walmart US Store OPD organization, owning engineering strategy and execution for federated Digital Twins, manufacturing modernization, and GNFR supply chain and asset procurement systems.
What you will do
- Start with operational problems: Work directly with store, energy, real estate, manufacturing, and GNFR partners to understand user workflows, operational constraints, and business priorities. Translate these into product requirements and engineering commitments.
- Set direction and prioritize investment: Define a multi-year technology roadmap with product and business leaders. Balance new capabilities, modernization, technical debt, operational resilience, and cost; make investment tradeoffs explicit.
- Measure value after launch: Establish business, functional, and engineering baselines before delivery. Review adoption and realized benefits with operating teams, and use evidence to adjust priorities and solution design.
- Connect Walmart’s digital twins: Deliver a federated ecosystem connecting 13+ digital twins through a unified connective layer for shared simulation, standardized data, and cross-domain intelligence. Preserve domain ownership while enabling information to work across business boundaries.
- Create a consistent operational model: Standardize the enterprise ontology for associates, products, spaces, and equipment. Define shared identifiers, relationships, and data contracts that reduce silos and shorten use-case onboarding from months to weeks.
- Turn simulation into operating decisions: Scale simulation for HVAC, lighting, and refrigeration energy efficiency; emergency routing; predictive equipment maintenance; and hazard detection across stores and the supply chain. Partner with business owners to validate results and incorporate them into operational workflows.
- Lead the technical design: Own architecture decisions for 3D engine integration, core service databases, spatial and equipment data, alarms, and event processing. Establish data freshness, interoperability, and simulation validation practices so users can trust the results.
- Scale efficiently: Set baselines for simulation latency, query throughput, and concurrent scenario capacity. Improve compute and storage efficiency while maintaining the performance required by each business use case.
- Modernize meat and dairy operations: Direct the engineering strategy and technical roadmap for Walmart’s proprietary processing and manufacturing plants. Partner with plant leaders to prioritize operational needs and sequence delivery around production requirements.
- Connect operational data and workflows: Lead IoT and automation solutions that bring equipment and production information into usable engineering and business applications. Define integrations, data ownership, and exception handling across connected systems.
- Improve plant visibility and execution: Enable timely insight into equipment condition and operational exceptions. Work with manufacturing teams to reduce manual intervention and improve the reliability and efficiency of technology-supported production processes.
- Deliver safely into live operations: Coordinate testing, site readiness, deployment windows, training, and support with plant and operations partners. Validate changes against operational requirements and establish clear recovery and escalation procedures.
- Own GNFR warehouse technology: Lead engineering and technical operations for Warehouse Management Systems across the GNFR network, with accountability for dependable inventory and fulfillment workflows.
- Deliver OneAtlas facility rollouts: Lead technical rollout and integration across upcoming GNFR facilities. Own integration readiness, data migration validation, end-to-end testing, cutover, stabilization, and handoff to operational support.
- Support store asset maintenance: Enhance ordering, inventory tracking, and fulfillment of maintenance and replacement parts for commercial HVAC, refrigeration systems, fixtures, and other store assets. Improve visibility for stores and service technicians from request through fulfillment.
- Connect procurement and fulfillment: Modernize asset procurement, catalog management, inventory visibility, and order routing between stores, service technicians, and GNFR distribution centers. Address inconsistent data and workflow gaps that delay fulfillment or require manual coordination.
- Own application and integration design: Guide domain modeling, service boundaries, APIs, event contracts, workflow orchestration, and data architecture across the portfolio. Make deliberate choices on scale, decoupling, extensibility, and maintainability.
- Engage in the hardest engineering decisions: Work directly with architects and engineers on complex design and production problems. Challenge assumptions, review alternatives, and explain tradeoffs in business and technical terms.
- Modernize with continuity: Define incremental migration and integration strategies for existing business systems. Protect data integrity and operational continuity through compatibility planning, reconciliation, controlled rollout, and tested rollback or recovery paths.
- Govern data quality and access: Establish clear ownership, validation, lineage, and access controls for equipment, location, catalog, inventory, and operational event data. Partner with security and relevant business teams on privacy, security, and compliance requirements.
- Own the full development lifecycle: Set expectations for design reviews, code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, documentation, and production readiness. Cover integration, performance, resilience, and critical business workflows in validation.
- Run reliable business services: Define service-level objectives and agreements that reflect operational criticality. Establish end-to-end observability across applications, integrations, and business flows, including detection of stalled or incomplete processing.
- Lead incident prevention and recovery: Build clear on-call ownership, runbooks, escalation paths, and recovery procedures. Review incidents with business partners, address recurring causes, and test continuity and disaster recovery plans.
- Improve performance and unit economics: Use telemetry, profiling, and capacity analysis to improve latency, throughput, and resource utilization. Manage cloud, storage, and software costs against the business value and workload served.
- Eliminate operational toil: Automate repetitive support, data validation, deployment, and recovery tasks. Measure reductions in manual effort and failure rates while retaining appropriate controls for actions affecting live operations.
- Build and develop the organization: Design teams with clear ownership and appropriate spans and layers. Hire and develop engineering managers, architects, and senior technical contributors across software, data, IoT, and systems engineering.
- Set a high performance standard: Run consistent goal setting, coaching, calibration, promotion, and performance management. Build succession plans and strengthen both technical and people leadership.
- Establish execution mechanisms: Translate strategy into OKRs, milestones, dependency plans, and regular business reviews. Surface risks early, resolve cross-team dependencies, and maintain clear accountability for commitments and benefits.
- Influence across functions: Align executive stakeholders in Supply Chain, Real Estate, Store Operations, Manufacturing, Product, and Global Technology. Communicate decisions, investment needs, progress, and risks clearly to technical and business audiences.
- Model Walmart values: Respect the Individual, Act with Integrity, Serve our Customers and Members, and Strive for Excellence. Create an inclusive environment where associates can challenge assumptions, learn, and take ownership.
