About the role
The Controllership team within Walmart's finance organization is responsible for payroll processing, accounting, compliance, and management reporting. Walmart's finance team delivers critical insights, strategic analysis, and informed guidance for a global retailer, applying analytical expertise to assess risks and build financial models. This role manages end-to-end payroll accounting, budgeting, month-end close and accruals, RSU/ESOP accounting, statutory compliance, payroll MIS reporting, automation, and audit coordination.
What you will do
- End-to-end payroll expense accounting: Own monthly accounting, review, and closure for payroll-related expenses across entities/cost centers in line with accounting policy and close timelines. Ensure accurate classification, allocation, and posting of payroll costs (salary, incentives/bonus, benefits, reimbursements, etc., as applicable).
- Payroll accruals & month-end close ownership: Prepare, validate, and post payroll accruals (salary accruals, bonus/incentive accruals, leave/benefit accruals, and other payroll provisions as applicable). Drive month-end close activities including reconciliations, variance explanations, and timely clearance of open items.
- RSU & ESOP accounting: Manage accounting for equity-based compensation (RSU/ESOP) including expense recognition, true-ups, accruals, and reporting support. Partner with relevant stakeholders to validate inputs, ensure completeness, and support any required disclosures/reconciliations.
- Payroll statutory compliance (accounting & controls): Ensure statutory payroll-related compliance from a controllership perspective (e.g., accounting, documentation, reconciliations, and evidence for statutory deductions/payments). Maintain strong process governance and control checks to ensure compliance readiness and minimize risk.
- Payroll MIS reporting & insights: Prepare and review periodic management reporting related to payroll costs, accrual movements, and key drivers. Provide commentary and insights on trends, anomalies, and key variances for leadership consumption. Own Cost per Head (CPH) analysis including data validation, trend analysis, and actionable insights. Partner with Finance/Business teams to explain movements and support decision-making. Deliver recurring MIS packs/dashboards with high accuracy and timeliness. Standardize metrics, definitions, and reporting cadence; continuously improve data quality and usability.
- Automation & process improvement: Identify opportunities to automate accruals, reconciliations, and MIS reporting (e.g., workflow improvements, template standardization, dashboarding). Lead automation projects end-to-end: requirements, testing/validation, controls, documentation, and stakeholder adoption.
- Audit support & compliance readiness: Act as primary controllership POC for internal/external audit requests related to payroll, accruals, and equity compensation. Ensure timely evidence submission, issue resolution, and closure of audit observations with sustainable corrective actions.
- Stakeholder management & cross-functional coordination: Coordinate with Payroll Operations, HR, Tax, FP&A, and other Finance teams to ensure accurate inputs, timely close, and issue resolution. Manage escalations, drive alignment on timelines, and ensure clear communication of outcomes/risks.
- Documentation & SOP ownership: Maintain SOPs, process notes, control checklists, and RCM/supporting documentation for all key activities. Ensure knowledge continuity and robust handovers to reduce key-person dependency.
