About the role
Yahoo Mail is the ultimate consumer inbox with hundreds of millions of users, accessed from computer, phone or tablet, and Yahoo is a values-led company with a house of 50+ media, communication and technology brands. The team is looking for a highly qualified Android developer with strong React Native experience to build the next generation of mobile mail experience for Yahoo. This principal engineering role involves designing, shipping, and owning mobile features end-to-end, driving technical decisions, mentoring teammates, and leveraging AI coding assistants to accelerate development.
What you will do
- Designing, developing, testing, and shipping features for Yahoo Mail's mobile experience, used by millions of users worldwide
- Owning projects end-to-end, from technical design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvements
- Performing code reviews while contributing to and learning from a highly collaborative engineering culture
- Driving technical decisions and recommending scalable, maintainable solutions to complex engineering and user experience challenges
- Tackling challenging performance, reliability, and usability problems with elegant and efficient solutions
- Taking ownership of key features and technical areas that directly impact millions of users
- Collaborating closely with Product, Design, Data Science, and Engineering teams to deliver exceptional user experiences
- Mentoring teammates and helping raise the engineering bar across the team
- Leveraging AI coding assistants and software engineering agents to accelerate development while maintaining high standards for code quality, security, and performance
Skills used in this role
What the employer is looking for
- BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 8+ years of experience building consumer-facing Android, mobile, or web applications
- Deep technical knowledge of Android application development using Kotlin and Java, with a solid understanding of Android framework components, application lifecycles, and Jetpack Compose
- Strong foundation in Computer Science, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, and software engineering principles
- Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs and third-party services
- Hands-on experience using AI-powered development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code/Desktop, Gemini, or similar, including CLI and cloud agent workflows as part of daily software development
- Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams
Preferred qualifications
- Experience shipping Android applications to the Google Play Store
- Experience building email, messaging, or communication applications
- Experience with React Native or modern web technologies including React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3
- Experience working with AI, Machine Learning, or Generative AI technologies
- Experience working in Unix/Linux development environments
- Experience with Agile/Scrum software development methodologies
- Experience leading large feature initiatives or driving mobile application growth and adoption
